Protesters gathered in the Hartford Capitol building, in Connecticut, on Wednesday could be heard chanting "JUST SAY NO" as the house voted in favour of stricter gun legislation.
Gun legislation, which according to advocacy groups is the strongest and most comprehensive to be taken up across the nation, moved closer to passage early on Thursday as the Connecticut House approved the tough gun measure. The Governor of Connecticut is expected to pass the bill later on Thursday.
The legislation includes the banning of the sale or purchase of large-capacity magazines, adding as many as 100 gun types to the state's list of banned firearms; banning armor-piercing bullets; requirement of background checks for all firearms sales, including at gun shows; establishment of safety standards for school buildings; mental health training for teachers; and expansion of mental health research in the state.
Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut, was the scene of one of America's worst shooting incidents, which took place just five months ago. The incident in which twenty elementary school students, and six adults were shot and killed sent shock waves throughout the country.
